Enlisted 2nd Lieut 29/9/61 - 1/7/62 resigned his commission due to health- his papers say he was severely injured falling from his horse during the battle of Port Republic on 8th June 1862. They also contain a letter from his Colonel regretting his loss top the Regiment.
Murphy further reenlisted as Sgt 1/3/64 - "H" Co. WV 1st Cavalry and being his later rank, the medal is named this way. Medal in mint condition and contained in named box of issue, a scarce rank to medal. Like British Campaign medals, these medals were issued to soldiers who fought for the Union during the Civil War. West Virginian was one of the few States that authorised such a medal to veterans, the medal being based on the British Crimea and Ohio veterans medal. It was issued in 1866. This example sold with full service musters and pension papers (large amount).
