PUNJAB 1848-49, CLASPS, CHILIANWALA, GOOJERAT ‘ENSIGN A. TAYLOR, 25TH BENGAL N.I.’
At the battle of Chillianwala, the 25th Native Infantry were part of Brigadier Pennycuicks brigade, who along with the 24th Foot and 45th Native Infantry attacked the Sikh positions with the bayonet. Charging out of the jungle and under heavy cannon fire, these three regiments attacked the Sikh guns and in a short but terrible assault were all but cut to pieces and were forced into a confused retreat. Each regiment would suffer heavy casualties.
Addington Taylor was appointed Ensign in the 25th Bengal N.I., 11 June 1847; Lieutenant, 15 November 1853; Captain, 17 October 1857; Major, 24 January 1867; Lieutenant-Colonel, 11 June 1873; Colonel, 8 December 1877. ‘Served throughout the Punjab campaign of 1848-49, including the affair at Ramnuggur, and battles of Sadoolapore, Chilianwala and Goojerat (Medal with two clasps).’
Condition VF. One of the most desirable Native Infantry Regiments for Chilianwala due to their association with the 24th Foot and scarce on the market.
