INDIAN MUTINY MEDAL

INDIAN MUTINY TO A BUGLER IN THE 71ST HIGHLAND LIGHT INFANTRY WHO ON DISCHARGE FROM THE ARMY WAS EMPLOYED IN THE COLONIAL CONVICT SERVICE, WESTERN AUSTRALIA

INDIAN MUTINY 1857-9, CLASP CENTRAL INDIA ‘BUGLER RICHD FAIRGREAVE, 71ST HIGHD L.I.’

Richard Fairgreave, a 20 year old Japaner from Canongate, Edinburgh, enlisted into the 71st Highland Light Infantry in Glasgow on 25 May 1840. He was tried by Court Martial and imprisoned numerous times up until 1855 and was appointed Bugler on 15 February 1858. Despite this, his Character was noted as ‘Good’ on discharge on 2 June 1862.

On 20 October 1864, in Perth, Australia, He signed up for employment in the Colonial Convict Service, Western Australia, having embarked on the Convict Ship Clara on 11 January 1864.

It is not clear how long he remained in the Convict Service but he died in Paisley, Renfrewshire on 27 January 1890, aged 65. His trade listed as ‘painter’.

Condition VF, contact marks and minor EK’s. Sold with copy service papers and other research.

An interesting medal.
