GENERAL SERVICE 1962-2007, CLASP, NORTHERN IRELAND ‘24565120 PTE B. R. COWLEY, PARA’; SOUTH ATLANTIC 1982, WITH ROSETTE ‘24565120 PTE B. R. COWLEY, PARA’
Private Bryn Richard Cowley served with 1 Section, 6 Platoon, 3rd Battalion Parachute Regiment at the battle of Mount Longdon, 11/12th June 1982, during the Falklands War of 1982.
Bryn Cowley is mentioned numerous times in James O’Connell’s superb book ‘Three Days In June’ . The book includes recollections of Cowley’s sections role during the battle by members of his section and platoon, descriptions of the battle, advancing and contact with the enemy, members of the section becoming casualties, how Cowley and two other members of the section were cut off in advance of their platoon and were nearly shot by their own side whilst trying to get back to safety and eventually being able to retrieve their wounded comrades ; Pte Cowley would bring in the wounded Private Clark etc etc
After initially advancing well, 6 Platoon commanded by Lieutenant Shaw came under heavy and sustained fire from Argentinean positions, sustaining a critical number of casualties. Of Cowley’s 1 section, section commander; L/Cpl Murdoch was killed and Privates Bateman, Eaton and Clark were wounded. Leaving just Privates Cowley, Simpson and Slade standing at the end of this terribly hard fought battle.
Condition GVF, mounted for wear with just minor edge bruising.
