AN OUTSTANDING AND IMPORTANT MAHRATTA WAR C.B. AND SERINGAPATAM PAIR AWARDED TO COLONEL MADRAS CAVALRY WHO’s EXTENSIVE LIST OF CAMPAIGNS INCLUDES THOSE UNDER WELLINGTON AND STEVENSON 1803-6

Colonel Thomas Henry Somerset Conway, appointed C.B. London Gazette 14 October 1818. Awarded for services in the Mahratta War 1817-18. Mentioned in General Orders for the battle of Maheidpore and taking of Talneir. At the latter action, the Killadar of Talneir surrendered in person to Lieutenant-Colonel Conway. Conway had a long and illustrious career, joining the Madras Army in 1795 and served with distinction in the siege and battle of Colombo in 1795; battle of Malavilly and siege of Seringapatam in 1799; sieges of Jaulnah, Asseerghur and Gawilghur, and battles of Argaum and Assaye in 1803; sieges of Chandore and Galna, and the assault upon Lasselgaum in 1804 to name a few. During the years 1803-6 he frequently acted as secretary and brigade-major to Col. Stevenson.

Three very informative obituaries are copied in full on my very large PDF write up.

Condition, GVF/EF. CB date mark indistinct but probably 1815, reverse triple-crown embellishment a very good jewellers replacement, almost certainly period; Seringapatam contained in an ornately chased silver rimmed glazed frame, several very similar examples of this style of case suggest they obtained from the same jeweller.

Really superb pair to a very important figure in the Madras Army with an outstanding service. Ex DNW.
