SUTLEJ 1845-46, ALIWAL REVERSE, ONE BAR, SOBRAON ‘SERJT WM FRS WATSON 53RD REGT’, PUNJAB 1848-49, NO CLASP ‘COLOUR SERJT W.F.WATSON, 53RD FOOT.’
William Francis Watson, a 22 year old hairdresser from Templemore, Derry, attested for the 76th Foot on 29 June 1835. Promoted to Corporal on 8 December 1842, he transferred to the 53rd Foot on 1 May 1844. Promoted Sergeant on 15 July 1845, he was reduced to Private after being tried by Regimental Court Martial at;
“Rawal Pindie on 23rd July 1851 for walking about in a state of absolute nudity in the immediate neighbourhood of the women of the Regiment”.
He was finally discharged as unfit for further service on 26 August 1856. Service papers note served nearly 12 years in North America and 15 and ¾ in the East and West Indies.
