Dudley Price was born in Erdington on 27 September 1898 and having attended King Edwards Sixth School, Stourbridge, he became a Civil Servant; also serving in the Civil Service Cadet Battalion. Aged 18 years, he enlisted into the 28th London Regiment (Artists' Rifles) as a Private, Regimental number 762599 on 30 September 1916. He was discharged to Commission as 2nd Lieutenant (T) in the Royal Flying Corps 19 April 1917.
As Price served with the R.A.F. into the 1920’s, his service records will held the R.A.F. Records Office in Cranwell and exact detail of his flying service is unknown for the Great War. He clearly served as a pilot, the Air Force Lists for April 1918 lists him as an Aeroplane Officer, he wears R.F.C. and R.A.F. wings, was M.I.D. and served overseas (due to his medal entitlement). Post 1918, The Air Force Lists to give postings and the following has been extracted:
Air Force List for April 1920 lists him as a Flying Officer with 4 Squadron, then stationed at Farnborough. From 8 February 1921 as a Flying Officer with 47 Squadron in Egypt and then 4 Training School in Egypt from 23 February 1922. He was still there in September 1924. Price died, reason unknown, on the 4th March 1925 at the Central R.A.F. Hospital, Avenue House, Finchley Middlesex.
Gazette date for M.I.D. unknown, however the M.I.D. is confirmed in ‘Artist Rifles, Regimental Roll of Honour and War Record 1914-1919’ and he is clearly wearing an M.I.D. on his medal ribbon in the portrait photo of him in R.A.F. Dress uniform.
Sold with a folder of various research including two superb large photographs of him in uniform, one in R.F.C. uniform dated 1919, the other wearing the R.A.F. Dress uniform (and his medals). Copy Short Service papers, various Air Force Lists, Birth Certificate.
