WWII JAPANESE SOUVENIR PAINTED HELMET “RYUKUS 1945” AND “OKINAWA 1945”

Model 30-32 (Type 90), WWII Japanese helmet which has been repainted in olive drab, then the colour at the top of the partially removed to reveal what appears to look like islands, with part of the original Japanese paint showing through. A Japanese War flag has been painted to the centre, flanked by “RYUKUS 1945” and “OKINAWA 1945”. Below the star badge has been painted red and this is flanked by Japanese characters. The island shapes look like approximations of actual islands, as opposed to exact maps but its clearly been done deliberately.

The helmet lacks its liner and has been repainted in olive drab. The remains of an old cord is attached to one inner ring where the helmet was clearly hung from a wall or such.

A most attractive souvenir, perhaps taken by a soldier from one of these islands and painted on the journey home of such.
