A large Boer War photo album containing 69 photos, the majority being large 14cm x 20cm, with two to a page, some just one photo per page. Photos in album have many photos of well known battlefields and towns, blown up bridges etc; Ladysmith, Majuba Hill, Colenso bridge, bomb damage in Kimberley, hoisting the flag in Pretoria, various shots of the battlefield and graves on Spionkop, with three gruesome images of dead British Soldiers and another of a dead Boer sniper (all large sized photos), Sir Charles Warren’s camp after the battle, Johannesburg, bridges of the Tugela, couple of sandbagged Dam at Ladysmith, Vaalkrantz, General Woodgates grave at Spionkop, group photo of NCO’s of 62nd Battery RFA, Royal Engineers building a bridge, several of Zulu’s and six smaller family shots.
A couple of pages also have mementoes; two have decorated ‘Silver Leaves from Cape Town’, another, a piece of Khaki sent home to loved ones with an inscription from the soldiers. Also a ‘Special Army Order’ from General Buller regarding the relief of Ladysmith. Album has been rebound to protect card pages which are quite brittle in places, one page having a fair bit of the corner snapped off.
Inside the album are loose pages from other albums, 3 pages from a Scottish Regt album, 20 photos mainly smaller sized and seem to be mainly photos taken at Fort George or Highlands. Also another which appears to be from the Royal Engineers in South Africa, 12 photos in all, smaller sized but some quite good ones of blown bridges, Boer prisoners etc.
Condition of the photos is good but a number are faded, some quite faded but the PDF’s with pictures should give a good idea of content.
