NAVAL GENERAL SERVICE 1793-1840, CLASP, ALGIERS ‘JOHN WEST’ ADDITIONALLY ENGRAVED ON EDGE
John West served as a Boy 3rd Class aboard H.M.S. Hebrus at Algiers. A further five men of this name appear on the Admiralty roll for a variety of clasps; Egypt, Mars 21st April 1798, Trafalgar and 2 x Syria. However you can be pretty much 100% confident this is his. Firstly the medal has been known since 1907 and from then until now, the price difference between an Algiers and Syria clasp medal would have made it pretty pointless switch clasps (especially when there are far rarer clasps to John West’s); the same goes for Navarino’s, Java’s, Martinique’s and Guadaloupe’s. Secondly the additional period unofficial engraving of the Ship further reduces the difference in price.
One of the Syria medals to John West was sold at DNW in 2002.
Condition GVF+ Ex Glendining’s, June 1907.
