NAVAL GENERAL SERVICE 1793, CLASP BASQUE ROADS ‘GEORGE EDMUNDS’
George Edmunds served as Private, Royal Marines in H.M.S. Theseus during Lord Cochrane’s successful destruction of a number of French ships, including four ships of the line, in the Basque Roads, off St. Nazaire, 11-12 April 1809.
Discharge papers note the Corporal George Edmunds, aged 32, was discharged from the Royal Marines on 12 July 1814 on reduction of the Corps. He had served 8 years and 3 months.
He was admitted to Greenwich Hospital as a pensioner, aged 67 on 3 March 1848, No. 2448. Papers note he was born in Woolwich, Kent his last ship H.M.S. Theseus, so since this was the ship he served on at Basque Roads in 1809 and was discharged in 1814, he clearly served for over 5 years of his service on that ship. Edmunds died on 20 April 1852.
