WW1 GERMAN AIRCRAFTCAMOUFLAGE FABRIC AND PLY FROM TAIL SECTION

This 6.5” x 16” section of fabric covered plywood almost certainly comes from either the fin or the right horizontal stabiliser, probably a Halberstadt CLIV. The thin ply is slightly moulded to curve around an inner frame. Edge of ply and smaller section show small pin holes where pined to the frame (see pic). The fabric covering is painted green and brown and on top of this are what’s left of some other paint; a red backing with white/cream over (maybe just faded to a cream colour). This was probably originally part of an insignia or number as it was clearly only applied to part of the fabric.

The section itself is in two pieces, the front section about 4”, the larger section 12” but are a perfect fit. Both ply and fabric show signs of tape once applied. This section came from the collection of Dr Harman, which included fabric and parts taken from Paul Strahle’s Halberstadt CLIV’s – pieces of which I also acquired and from the shape of it may well be from one of these aircraft.
