WW1 PRE 1916 FRENCH PILOT WING IN GOLD BY FIX

Prior to the introduction of the pilot wing in 1916, French pilots often wore private purchase wings. Of these the most common, indeed so common it is often thought of as official, was the FIX wing. Produced by the Bijoux-FIX company, this wing is very frequently seen in photos of French pilots, even post 1916.

The Bijoux-FIX company produced these wings using a process of applying gold foil over brass, a process called ‘gold filled’ in Europe.

These wings have, as with all badges of the period, been copied and are often sold as solid gold. This wing is however a classic example of the wing produced by FIX. Of hollow construction, 68mm length and a weight of 4.96g. There is a ‘FIX’ patent mark to the wing and a stamp to the pin catch, which is believed to be a retailers stamp.

Condition is excellent, with a little wear of the finish to the high points
