TWO WW1 FRENCH AVIATION ALBUMS TO ESCADRILLE C39/SOP39 AND SAL39 CIRCA 1916-18 INCLUDING PHOTOS OF 43 VICTORY ACE CHARLES NUNGESSER

Two WW1 French aviation related Photo albums containing approximately 500 photos between them and both albums measuring 33 x 25cm. There are so many photos, its give an average size but in the main they are 16 x 11cm down to 6 x 8 cm. The albums appear to belong to a member a member of the groundcrew/mechanic of Escadrille C39 and its later designations; SOP39 and SAL39. I have not identified the owners name, though its clear who he is as he appears many times and in family shots. Of the 500 photos, approximately 200 photos that are family related, both pre War, Wartime and post War and there is some duplication of photos between the albums.

The majority of the photos concentrate on C39 as there are a much larger number of photos on Caudron’s. There are a good number of aircrew shots, though more groundcrew/mechanics, many in or around aircraft and a great many aircraft of various type, both 2- seaters and some fighters; though in the main Caudron’s and many crashed aircraft shots. Also aircraft insignia shots; confirming the above units. Some excellent large photos of a crashed German Albatros CVII, along with its captured crew who are posing with French pilots and others of a captured LVG CII. There are a number of good aerial shots, the majority of which show part of the Caudron’s wings or struts.

Of pilots that I can identify, there are two excellent photos the famed 43 victory Ace, Captain Charles Nungesser standing next to a Spad. Interestingly this aircraft has another pilots markings on it. There are also two very good portrait photos of Captain Thélis Vachon, commander of SOP39/SAL39, wearing his Awards.

Photos are in good condition, some a little faded, others excellent – see PDF for examples of content, which is again excellent. Photos have been placed in the albums using photo corners but none seem to have been removed.

A couple of really nice albums that could do with some in depth research.
