A FINE WW1 TAM O’SHANTER BELONGING TO AN OFFICER HIGHLAND LIGHT INFANTRY AND ROYAL FLYING CORPS PILOT, LATER AIR VICE MARSHAL, ROYAL AIR FORCE

A scarce named Officer’s Great War Highland Light Infantry Tam O’Shanter, belonging to Air Vice Marshal Sir Alexander, Royal Air Force, ex War Highland Light Infantry and Royal Flying Corps.

Tam O’Shanter with double stitched lining, manufacturers lapel ‘Andersons & Sons, Edinburgh and Glasgow’, with ’A. P. Davidson HLI’ inscribed under the lapel, silk bow to the rear, contained in a leather collar box with the recipient’s initials ‘A.P.D. H.L.I.’ on the lid. The badge is an original Other Ranks example which has been added by a collector. Marks where the original Officers badge was affixed can be seen.

AIR VICE MARSHAL SIR ALEXANDER DAVIDSON

Air Vice Marshal Sir Alexander Davidson (1894-1971) was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant with the Highland Light Infantry on 19 July 1916, he was seconded to the Royal Flying Corps and served as a pilot with No 4 and 11 Squadron before being appointed Flying Officer on 1 September 1916. He held various posts throughout WWI and the Inter-War period before serving with the Air Attache in Warsaw in 1939. During his time as Air Attache in Warsaw he was a member of the committee in London that held talks in 1939 with delegates from Poland about the supply of Battles, Hurricanes and Spitfires, but supplies failed to reach the country before the German victory.
