SCARCE WW1 US 1ST ARMY BALLOON CORPS NCO TUNIC AND BREECHES

WWI U.S. Signal Corps Tailor Made Officer type senior NCO Tunic and Breeches. Features four button-flap pockets and a five-button front, with two lower hooks to keep skirt ‘fitted’.

The stand-up collar is complete with small pin-back metal "U.S." and Signal Corps devices. These much smaller that the usual Officer type. Usually you would expect a ‘US’ button and ‘Unit’ button to either side of collar for enlisted Men/NCO’s but these being smaller insignia in the same configuration to NCO’s/EM, as opposed Officer; which is ‘US’ to each collar with ‘unit’ behind each ‘US’, means it must be an NCO’s. To add to this there are no signs of other collar devices being attached, no signs of buttons, no shoulder ranks bars have been worn and no officer cuff band. Their may be signs of where Sgt stripes have been attached to the right arm at some point but I’m not 100% on this.

The upper left sleeve features the "A" patch the "First Army Aviation Group", this is an unusual crochet type, a similar example of which (just the ‘A’) can be see in De Chenes ‘The Insignia, Uniforms and Equipment of the US Army Balloon Corps’ . Below this is a superb and scarce Balloon Corps badge. The lower left sleeve has double gold-wire overseas service stripes.

The riding breeches are missing a button and have some scattered moth holes to front. The tunic is in excellent condition, with just one pin head size hole to lower right sleeve, this barely noticeable.

A very scarce aviation tunic.
