SOUTH AFRICA MEDAL

A UNIQUE SOUTH AFRICA 1877-9 MEDAL TO AN OFFICER OF THE 1/24TH FOOT WHO TOOK PART IN THE ZULU WAR OF 1879

SOUTH AFRICA 1877-79, NO CLASP ‘CAPT. H. B. MOFFATT. 1-24TH FOOT.’

Herbert Belasyse Moffat was born on 4 March 1844, at Sunbury, Middlesex and after attending Royal Military College, Sandhurst, was appointed Ensign in the 1/24th Foot on 6 July 1864. Promoted Lieutenant, 26 February 1867, he served as H.M.’s Vice-Consul at Sebastopol, February 1877 to November 1878, having been promoted Captain, 4 May 1878.

Moffat was posted to 25 Brigade Depot in May 1878 and served in South Africa from 2 December 1878 and 2 October 1879, taking part in the Zulu War of 1879. During the War he was employed on duties in Natal, therefore not taking part in the battle of Isandlwana where so many of his brother officers were killed.

He was appointed Garrison Instructor, Malta, October 1881, being advanced to Major on 25 February 1882. In July 1884 he left his post in Malta and was appointed Garrison Instructor at Bangalore in November 1885, serving in India until September 1887. Moffat was finally promoted Lieutenant-Colonel, Half Pay, on 4 March 1892.

This the only medal without clasp to an officer in the 1/24th Foot.
