Harry Lane was born at St Luke's, Leeds in 1878 and was a porter also serving in the 4th Middlesex Militia upon his enlistment in the 3rd Dragoon Guards at Hounslow on 23 June 1898. Lane served with the Regiment in South Africa during the Boer War from 21 January 1901-25 August 1904 (Queen's Medal & 5 clasps). He was posted missing 20 March 1901 (location unknown) but newspaper reports state he had rejoined by 10 April 1901. Dated clasp issued separately and loose through later roll and never attached to the medal.
