AN HISTORICALLY INTERESTING EASTER UPRISING VICTORY MEDAL AWARDED TO AN NCO 2/8TH NOTTS AND DERBY REGIMENT WHO WAS COMMENDED FOR THE BATTLE OF MOUNT STREET, 26 APRIL 1916, WHERE HE WAS ALSO WOUNDED.

3190, later 305992, Warrant Officer II Herbert Lawrence, a 25 year old printer from Newark, served in the 2/8th Notts and Derby Regiment (Sherwood Foresters) during the Great War. His MIC listing the award of the British War and Victory Medals only. He was also awarded a Silver War Badge.

Lawrence served as Company Sergeant Major, B Company, 2/8th Sherwood Foresters during the Easter Rising, and was wounded during the battle of Mount Street, 26 April 1916, also being one of the NCO’s and men listed by the Commanding Officer of having distinguished themselves during the battle.

Service papers note he received a Gunshot Wound to the lung on 26 April 1916 and a second wound whilst service in France; Gunshot Wound to the left leg on 18 April 1917.

Having joined the Army as a Private on 16 November 1914, and risen to Acting Company Sergeant Major by December 1915, Lawrence served on Home service (including Ireland), 16 November 1914 – 26 February 1917, France 27 February 1917 – 18 May 1917. He was invalided to England on 19 May 1917 and discharged due to wounds on 23 November 1917.

Condition VF. Sold with copied research, including service papers, MIC, orders noting commendation and various research regarding the battle of Mount Street.
