CABUL 1842 TO A PRIVATE IN THE 9TH FOOT

CABUL 1842 ‘PTE. J. HENNES. 1/9TH. FOOT.’

1269 Private James Hennes was born in Statford, Essex in 1812 and enlisted into the 9th Foot on 29 September 1835. He took part in the Afghan campaign of 1842 and later the Sutlej campaign of 1845-6, being present at the battles of Moodkee, Feroshuhur and Sobraon (medal and 2 clasps). Transfering to the 98th Foot in November 1846, he further took part in the Punjab campaign of 1848-9 (medal and no clasp). He was further awarded the Long Service Medal and was finally discharged as unfit for duty at Chatham, 11 August 1857.

Condition VF. Officially engraved naming of the style seen on Afghanistan 1878’s, with later post-1873 suspension and original section of ribbon. Almost certainly an official late replacement issue, issued circa 1880. Sold with a substantial and well put together file of research, including narratives of campaigns, service papers etc.
