SOUTH AFRICA 1877-79 TO A DRIVER WHO SERVED IN 'C' TELEGRAPH TROOP, ROYAL ENGINEERS, THE FIRST FORMAL PROFESSIONAL BODY OF SIGNALLERS IN THE BRITISH ARMY. THEY FIRST SAW ACTION DURING THE ZULU WAR OF 1879

William Hedgecock was born at Maldon, Essex in 1855 and enlisted with the Royal Engineers at Westminster on 8 May 1977. Posted to 'C' troop, Royal Engineers he was joined the war in South Africa aboard Borussia which sailed to the Cape on 1 April 1979. Serving there until 27 January 1880 he transferred to the Army Reserve on 20 July 1880. Hedgecock was discharged on 8 May 1889.

'C' Telegraph Troop, Royal Engineers was the first formal professional body of signallers in the British Army and its duty was to provide communications for a field army by means of visual signalling, mounted orderlies and telegraph. They first say action in the Zulu War of 1879.

Condition VF, EK and a touch scratched round edge from cleaning. Sold together with copied service papers.
