GEO.VI DISTINGUISHED CONDUCT MEDAL ‘38269V SGT. G.S. PERKINS. I.L.H.K.R. UDF. DUPLICATE.’
Sergeant John Sinclair Perkin of the Imperial Light Horse/Kimberly Regiment was Awarded an immediate ‘Gothic Line’ DCM for his conduct during the desperate fighting at Monte Salvaro or point 826 where ILH/Kim.R. drove the enemy off the rocky peak after sustaining heavy losses. His
recommendation as follows:
‘At M.SALVARO, Pt 826, M.R. L739264 on the 23 Oct. 44 the Bn was engaged in an attack on a commanding and well defended mountain peak. As they advanced casualties in the platoon were heavy and the Platoon Officer was killed. Sjt PERKINS immediately took command of the platoon and under heavy enemy machine gun and mortar fire moved amongst his men, rallied them and fearlessly led them in the final attack. His outstanding leadership at a critical time resulted in the attaining of an important objective and the annihilation of the enemy position where many dead were strewn. The prompt assumption of command and the bravery of Sjt PERKINS was directly responsible for the success of the attack.’
Condition, VF, contact marks from wear with Perkin’s other medals and has been chromed. Medal is an Officially issued replacement, correctly marked ‘DUPLICATE’ after naming. A scarce award, only 57 Distinguished Conduct Medals awarded to South African Personnel during WWII.
