Private Peter Ross Norman of Adelaide, South Australia, was born on 3 September 1945 and served in Vietnam between 27 May 1965 and 11 June 1966 with the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR). The 1st Battalion was the first Australian battalion to be deployed in Vietnam and soon after arrival was placed under command of the U.S. 173rd Airborne Brigade, thus becoming the first Australian unit to serve in a U.S. formation.
