AA WW2 ‘D-DAY’ CASUALTY GROUP TO A PRIVATE OF THE 6TH BATTALION GREEN HOWARDS WHO LANDED IN THE FIRST WAVE AT SWORD BEACH, 6 JUNE 1944, AN NCO OF THE BATTALION WINNING THE ONLY VC ON D-DAY

1939-45 STAR, AFRICA STAR, ITALY STAR, FRANCE AND GERMANY STAR, DEFENCE AND WAR MEDAL, EFFICIENCY MEDAL, BAR TERRITORIAL ‘7897401 CPL. R. HALL. GREEN HOWARDS.’

Corporal Hall, then a Private, served with the 6th Battalion Green Howards during WW2 and was wounded in Normandy during the D-Day operations. His battalion was part of the 69th Infantry Brigade and was one of two battalions from this Brigade that formed the first wave of landings on King Sector, Gold Beach, at 07.37 on the morning D-Day itself.

Private Hall’s name appears on Casualty List 1483, listed with 45 other members of his battalion who were reported wounded, each with D.N.R. after their name (Date Not Received) which is the case for a large number of units casualties on this list. However those that do have dates are mainly for 6th and 7th June, with some a few days later. As such its clear that Private Hall and the other members of his battalion were wounded on D-Day itself, or within a day or two after.

Company Sergeant Major Stan Hollis of ‘D’ Company won the only Victoria Cross for D-Day itself. It is as yet unknown which company Private Hall served in.

Hall was awarded the Efficiency Medal on 13 Oct 1948.
