These Rolled brass Martini Henry cartridge cases were picked up by high end SA 1877-9 medal collector (and friend) on field trip, along with Major Paul Naish of the Natal Defence Force, to the Zulu battlefields in 1991 and have been sitting in a tin in his garage since he returned.
Each group will come with a printed note of provenance, noting when they were found, that he was with Major Naish at the time who witnessed these being dug up and of course signed by the collector. Condition of cartridges as seen.
Since these were picked up it is now illegal to pick up relics from the South Africa battlefields, so this is a somewhat scarce opportunity to pick up cartridge cases that I can say with full confidence are 100% from a specific Zulu War battlefield.
If you have a medal to a man who fought at the battle of Khambula, there is always the possibility he fired one of these!
