ROYAL NAVY L.S. & G.C., V.R. LEADING STOKER H.M.S. DUKE OF WELLINGTON WHO WAS RECOMMENDED FOR PROMOTION FOR MERITORIOUS CONDUCT ON OCCASION OF THE BOILER EXPLOSION ON H.M.S. WALLAROO ON 6 JANUARY 1904

Henry Cousins was born on 17 January 1866 at Bishopston and joined the Royal Navy as a Stocker 2 Class on 14 April 1887. He served on numerous ships between 1888 until discharged in July 1908, serving on H.M.S. Duke of Wellington, 8 December 1901-29 May 1902. His service papers note he was recommended for promotion for meritorious conduct on occasion of the boiler explosion on H.M.S. Wallaroo on 6 January 1904. On this date, one of the ships boilers exploded of Montague Island, off New South Wales, resulting in the deaths of four members of the crew and the wounding of three.
