AFGHANISTAN 1878-80, 3 CLASPS, CHARASIA, KABUL, KANDAHAR ‘1712. PTE. J. JERWOOD, 92ND HIGHRS.
John Jerwood, a 23 years old farm servant, born in Broadenbury, nr Honiton, Devon, enlisted into the 92nd (Gordon) Highlanders at Exeter on 25 October 1867. His overseas service consisted of:
East Indies 26 January to 30 March 1879
Afghanistan 31 March 1879 to 18 October 1880 – Afghan War
East Indies 19 October 1880 to 29 January 1881
Cape Colony 30 January 1881 to 29 January 1882 – 1ST Boer War
His service papers note that he ‘was slightly wounded with ‘abrasion of right knee grazed by a bullet in action at Kabul on 13th December 1879.’
The 92nd suffered a large number of casualties in action around Kabul on 13 and 14 December 1879. Having recovered from his wounds, Jerwood went on to serve with the 92nd during the 1st Boer War where the regiment suffered severely at the battle of Majuba Hill.
Jerwood was married in Edinburgh on 13 June 1884 and had 3 children, all brought onto the married establishment on 14 June 1886. He was discharged on 27 October 1890, his conduct was given as ‘very good’.
