THE SCARCE 5TH NEW ZEALAND MOUNTED RIFLES QUEENS SOUTH AFRICA 1899 TO A TROOPER WHO WAS SEVERELY WOUNDED IN ACTION AT MALOPO, NAAUWPOORT ON THE 9 OF SEPTEMBER 1900. A TOTAL OF 189 OFFICERS AND MEN OF THE NEW ZEALAND CONTINGENTS WERE WOUNDED IN ACTION OR DIED OF WOUNDS DURING THE BOER WAR

QUEENS SOUTH AFRICA 1899, 4 CLASPS, CAPE COLONY, ORANGE FREE STATE, TRANSVAAL, SOUTH AFRICA 1901 ‘1690 TRPR. J.M. TAYLOR, NEW ZEALAND M.R.’

James Morrison Taylor, a 21 year old farmer from Aparima, Southland, New Zealand was drafted into service from the Southland Mounted Rifles on 25 March 1900, Serving with 15 Company (Otago Section), 5th Contingent, New Zealand Mounted Rifles, he was severely Wounded in Action at Malopo, Naauwpoort on the 9 September 1900. He was one of 3 men from the 5th wounded during this action.

He later transferred as 4712 (Sergeant) to the 7th Contingent in South Africa, the medal roll noting his QSA medal issued on the Otago roll. 5th Contingent (Otago) roll lists Taylor as further entitled to the Rhodesia Clasp, however there is no evidence that this was ever attached to the medal. The dated clasp loose on the ribbon as is common with dated clasps which was not issued until 1903.

189 Officers and men of the New Zealand Contingents were wounded in action or died of wounds during the Boer War, 14 of this number from the 5th New Zealand Mounted Rifles. The unit suffered a further 4 killed.
