NEW ZEALAND 1845, UNDATED REVERSE, J. CURLEY. 2D. WAIKATO REGT.
John Curley, a bushman, enlisted with the 2nd Waikato at Howick on 28 Aug 1863. He fought at Nukumara & Karakaramea. New Zealand Gazette of 12 October 1871 lists Curley among a list of medal claiments.
Curley was born in 1837 and gave his birthplace as Tillingham, Kent but other records suggest Roscommon, Ireland. He married Mary Ann Congdon in 1875 and died in Wellington in 1915. In 1871 he was in the newspaper because he & Alfred Crew had been shot at while shooting for pigeons. He received a Crown Land grant at Te Awamutu.
