John Wood served as Sergeant, Diamond Fields Horse during the 1878 campaign in Griqualand West.

Commander By Lt Colonel Warren of the Royal Engineers, this hard fighting unit formed from men from the Kimberley area, saw much action and many casualties during the 9th Frontier War in 1877 and Griqualand West in 1878. As Senior NCO, Wood was sure to have had previous military service and possible later service.
